About the Festival
The Southampton Chinese Lantern Festival is a vibrant celebration marking the official conclusion of the 2025 Chinese New Year festivities – the Year of the Snake. Rooted in Chinese traditions, this event is a joyous occasion for family and friends to come together through captivating lion dances, dragon dances, and cultural activities.
This year, UK Shaolin and the Hampshire Chinese Association bring these cherished traditions to the heart of Southampton City.
The festivities begin at the UK Shaolin Centre (Marlands Shopping Centre, just a 2-minute walk from Guildhall Square). Experience uplifting workshops promoting mental and physical well-being, including Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Kickboxing, Hoop, Karate, Yoga, traditional Chinese dance, and more.
Witness the grand Chinese dragon parade weaving its way from outside Westquay Shopping Centre into the main shopping area. Inside, enjoy a spectacular display of vibrant dragon and lion dances.

2025: Year of the Wood Snake
As we step into the Year of the Wood Snake, this festival reflects the characteristics and symbolism associated with this astrological sign, offering inspiration and celebration for all.
The Snake is considered a symbol of wisdom, intuition, adaptability, and elegance in Chinese culture. The element of Wood, linked with growth, renewal, and vitality, enhances these qualities further, creating a harmonious and promising year ahead.
This year encourages thoughtful planning, personal transformation, and a steady approach to achieving success. It’s a time for embracing patience, nurturing creativity, and fostering meaningful connections with others.
Through our festival, we honour these attributes of the Wood Snake by offering activities and workshops that promote balance, energy, and joy. From the artistry of traditional crafts to the power of dynamic performances, the celebration embodies the Snake’s spirit of renewal and harmony.
Let this festival be a moment to reflect on the possibilities of the year ahead while celebrating the richness of Chinese culture and tradition.
In Chinese culture, the Dragon symbolises power, nobility, honour, luck, and success, while the Snake embodies adaptability, wisdom, and elegance. As we step into the Year of the Wood Snake, this festival reflects these qualities, offering inspiration and celebration for all.
Note for Families:
Children aged 1-7 years must be accompanied by an adult during workshops. Most workshops are suitable for children aged 5 and above.
